America’s REAL football conference
September 16th, 2008
With the news that the SEC has placed 5 times in the top 10 of the AP College Football Rankings the argument is over: The SEC plays the best football around. While I have friends who are fans of the Big 12 and Pac-10 I prefer a conference where the defense is tough, the coaches are excellent, and winning is expected.
I’ve been an Alabama fan since my Dad plopped me down in front of the TV at the age of 2. While Alabama has had a few down years recently they’ve hired a great coach in Nick Saban and are ranked #9 after smacking around Western Kentucky on Saturday. The conference schedule will be tough and whoever does end up taking it deserves to be in the Natinal Championship game.
The SEC has five (5!!) coaches that have won a National Title – Saban, Meyer, Miles, Spurrier, and Fulmer. Another – Tuberville – had a 13-0 team in 2004 but didn’t get to play for the title.
The last two National Championships have been won by SEC schools – LSU and Florida
I love the SEC and I’m mainly writing this post because Matt has been pissing me with his pro-Mizzou garbage. Let there be no doubt if Mizzou played Georgia they would give up 90 points. It’s tough to live in a place where nobody knows enough about college football to have a decent conversation.

Truth be told, my contempt for college football, read that as football, is only outdone by my hatred for Matt’s online persona.

I definitely agree. Georgia would give up 90 points.

The sad thing is that although the Big 12 and the SEC are probably the two best conferences, we will probably see a PAC-10 team (USC) in the National Championship. Don’t get me wrong, I think USC is a great football team. I just think their schedule is much easier than any team coming out of the Big 12 or SEC.

I agree on the USC comment and they are punking people out this year. But when you play one ranked conference team all year (Oregon) that’s not a tough schedule.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK……… let’s not get carried away here with the “SEC is the best football ever” mantra. Most SEC fans think their team could compete in the NFL. “The SEC beats up on itself and then they get no national respect because they don’t have an undefeated record.”
The real problem is that somehow Jim Tressell finds a way to blow every pollster in the country and they constantly end up being in the NC against an SEC team. Yeah, the SEC team beats them, but that’s not really a surprise because the Big 10 is the most overrated conference in the country. Let the SEC team play someone real for the NC and then we’ll see.
As for USC being overrated, go ahead and play them if they’re so overrated. Yeah, the PAC10 looked horrible this week, that’s absolutely true, but I don’t think CAL, UCLA, ASU, or Oregon are as bad as they played this weekend.
And as for your own personal God that is Nick Saban, he’s generally considered to be the biggest dick in sports. Upon his arrival at Bama he sent out a memo that he was not be looked at or talked to by anyone within the athletic department unless he spoke to them first. Sounds like a great guy. If you want a great coach, look no further than Oregon, who is preparing their 3rd starting quarterback in the past 4 weeks while still maintaining a top-20 ranking.
Laef Out.

I agree that USC doesn’t have a tough path, but I guarantee you they would roll anyone in the SEC at any time. Pac-10 sucks this year, but USC is the best team in the country so who cares what conference is best.

@Laef – True, Saban is a dick and has a history of jumping to whatever team will give him the most money but I had to sit through the Shula, Price, Franchione, DuBose crapfest over the past ten years so I don’t care if he’s choking out puppies as long as he wins ballgames.
Oh and no one said USC was overrated.
@Allison – I think USC is the best team in the country right now but I can’t “guarantee” they would roll everyone in the SEC. I don’t really care about the conference debate I mainly wrote this post b/c my friend Matt has a huge boner (if 4 inches can be considered huge) over Mizzou and the Big 12 this year and he’s been pissing me off.

I see no reason for Mizzou fans to blow up their egos until we can beat a quality opponent like Oklohoma or Texas. Illinois is not the team of last year (look at their last game), and the only teams that should be difficult are Texas / Big 12 Championship opponent. The defense needs to dramatically improve in the secondary with too many meltdowns in coverage.(did they really return 10 starters ????) I could see Mizzou ending a season in the SEC with at least two losses, where they may go undefeated in the Big 12. Man did they kick the !@!@#$ out of Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl.

@Mizzoufan – There’s no question Mizzou has been greatly improved over the past several seasons and I think 2-3 (maybe 4) losses in the SEC would be a reasonable expectation especially considering the low quality defense Mizzou plays.

Woah. I had not seen Laef’s comment. I guess I should give him blow jobs when he asks. Seems like a lot of pent up frustration.
It would definitely be interesting to see how USC would fare in the SEC for an entire season. I think on any given week, they beat any team in the SEC. But, if they had to play that kind of competition week in and week out, it’d be interesting to see what they look like at week 5.

@Allison – Laef’s comment was longer than the post. He does have one thing right though – Tressel has to be blowing somebody.

Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer give ‘em hell Alabama!!!

I think USC would fare well in the SEC because they are the only team in the country with a defense as good as the SEC defenses. And, they can score more than 2-3 points.
But, I think it’s worth noting that every team recruits, coaches, and plays to the style of their conference. For instance, only in the SEC could you score 3 points, give up a safety, and still win. AS A TOP-10 TEAM! Oregon is well suited for the shootout style of the PAC-10, although they are supposed to have a lockdown defense this year. That’s the problem with the Big10 right now…they don’t have an identity: Michigan is trying to adopt the spread in a smash league, AN Ohio State University can’t decide if it should run a conventional offense or spread offense with Tyrelle Prior (sp?) Illinois is trying the spread also. Indiana is…scratch that. Maybe in a few years the Big 10 will fully adapt like the Big 12 has and be relevant again.
Anyway, way to drum up some debate on your blog, Nick. I’m going to try my hand at the blogging thing. Everyone stop by my blog and tell me what you think.

@Laef – Good comment but I had to delete the link to granny porn. Didn’t want anybody clicking on that a work. Don’t you know how working in an office goes? You need to put NSFW next to your links!
